Exploring Fablewood- May 1, 2017

Sorry for the two week break. It's been a little crazy with packing, moving, and a adopting a young dog. So it's been a little crazy setting up supplies and creating a new 'thinking and productive' space for drawing and digital and having a dog jumping around.

Last week I wanted to post the drawing below. It some how remained at my parents place and didn't make its way to my apartment. But now it's here! The great gnome druid Otto Galvin, guardian of the Cinder Thicket, a northern part of Fablewood. He created many arcane stones as beacon for the wisps to follow.

Exploring Fablewood- April 10, 2017

The past week has been busy with my full time job, my birthday, allergic reactions, and then getting sick. Have to say it was a tough week to get through but it didn't stop me from scribbling color on top of an drawing from Parade of Wisps. This gnome drawing was one of my favorite pieces I drew last year and I want to finish it off with full color to send off to art directors.

This is my progress so far

Gnome Barbarian

Another creation of the random dice rolls on my RPG Character Concept chart. All I do in Roll a 12 sided dice to create a random concept. Sometimes its easier to let fate choose then think. It's a create little exercise to try when I'm stumped. It has led to a bunch of finished drawings and characters for my Dungeons and Dragons game.

Here's the chart I created if you are interested in trying it out yourself. Would love to see your results if you use it

Exploring Fablewood- March 6, 2017

Every so often while working on a drawing. I stop to see how I feel about it. This week builds on the gnome scholar of last week with establishing the finished drawing. I spent a good amount of time adding elements to flesh out the gnomes environment. After spending a few hours working on the piece I began to feel disconnected from the piece, so its back to the drawing board. But here's the drawing I started, just to share.

Exploring Fablewood- February 27, 2017

This week is a return to a concept I posted a few weeks back.

I liked the concept as a gnome scholar sitting in his study working on recording magical spells. The idea was good but I wanted to add more to the piece before creating a finished image. So I went back to the drawing board, using the original drawing as the basis then added more elements to add narrative to the image

I'll be taking this drawing to finish, adding textures and rendering the image. Next week will be the finished drawing.

Exploring Fablewood- February 20, 2017

Its done! Or at least mostly, I might go back and push somethings after receiving some feed back. But any way, here it is! Parade of Wisps as a full colored illustration. With much trial and error and persuading photoshop to be my friend, I have created the fist full color illustration of this year. Which means I should start doing one of these a month at least. I forgot how rewarding it feels to finish a piece like this. And it's going to feel great sending this piece out to art directors to see.

Exploring Fablewood- February 13, 2017

More progress on the Parade of Wisps illustration. With a few false starts in the past, this is the furthest I've gotten to completing the process of digitally coloring this piece. From last week, I started to add highlights, shadows, and color washes. This step is the most time consuming due to trial and error. Though there is still a ways to go but with the next week off from my day job, I should have this illustration done for next week.

Exploring Fablewood- February 6, 2017

With one of my goals for this year is to create more colored illustrations, I finally jumped into the Parade of Wisps illustration. It was intimidating to start since it has a lot to juggle color, value, and saturation wise. But I thought back to how I worked with Corey to get the coloring process started. So I pulled up photoshop and made a rough color comp.

Though this color comp won't be how the piece looks in the end, it was a place to start and gave me a sense of direction to work towards. Here's how far I've gotten working on the piece after work. The whole piece has its base down with some of the shadows in and now starts the stage of values and color washes.

Exploring Fablewood- January 30, 2017

Over the past few days I've been thinking a lot about history. How our current events will be recorded for future generations to read and how it will be interpreted. Will 2017 be a blip on the radar or how tomes dedicated to it's events. And all that thinking led it's way back to my sketchbook and into Fablewood.

Here a gnome (currently named) records the magics of Fablewood onto parchment for future peoples to learn from. Not everyone might see the importance of spending the time to illustrate all the spells but this gnome knows that it could eventually be the only fountain to learn from. All the symbols in the image are pulled from alchemy symbols, mixed and matched to create something new. I wanted it to feel familiar but still weird. Over the next week I plan to take this drawing to a finished state along with adding a little more to the image as well.

Exploring Fablewood- January 9, 2017

The past week has been lots of sketching of what could be next for Fablewood. So far its lots of scribbles of compositions and story ideas. Though one sketch I happened to like is of a gnome with a hatched egg. The gnome is related to the gnome witch (Hazel) from Parade of Wisps. He prefers to study the other creatures of Fablewood, including this little phoenix that just hatched.

Exploring Fablewood- December 26, 2016

It's been a full year of Exploring Fablewood, every Monday this year I have shared a piece of Fablewood from sketches to designs to finished art. Next year I plan on pushing more into Fablewood, really making concrete world building decisions. And start to write (kind of a scary thought) and illustrate a new Fablewood story that will be part of next years sketch. Theme of next year, I have no idea, but thats the fun part to brain storm.

For the last post of this year I share a drawing from Parade of Wisps. Hazel and Azrug stand on the balcony of Azug's house in Fog Hollow. A little wisp stops by as they study the stars.

Explring Fablewood-December 19, 2016

Last week I posted the sketch of the Drummer Gnome and this week is the finished drawing. After creating all the pieces for Parade of Wisps, I still get ideas around the theme and continue to throw them down on paper. January I start to think of what the next branch of Fablewood's story will be and am looking forward to seeing what happens next. But for now, enjoy the gnome drumming for two stray wisps.

Exploring Fablewood- December 12, 2016

Fresh out of the sketch book from over the weekend, We have a gnome bard drumming for the Wisps of Fablewood. The sketches started out as mindless drawings during a lunch break then evolved into a realized idea. Though the drawing isn't 100 percent how I want it. It's a great base for the final drawing I plan to use on my first promo postcard for the new year. Next week will be the finished drawing.

Exploring Fablewood- October 17, 2016

Look what came in the mail, just in time for Illuxcon, Parade of Wisps. Illuxcon showcase will be the first opportunity to purchase a copy. Then it will be available online here on my website in the store I am building.

Just wanted to share the final product, the photos aren't the best, so you'll just have to see for yourself with your own copy of Parade of Wisps

Exploring Fablewood- September 19, 2016

Final week of production as the book gets sent to the printers on Friday for proofing. Now the fun part of showing the finished artwork that I've spent the past few months scrawling. Last week I showed a part of this illustration as the front cover of Parade of Wisps and now the whole drawing.

Also check out the portfolio, I've updated the 3 galleries with more images.

Exploring Fablewood- August 29, 2016

Postproduction of the book has begun. I plan on sending the book out mid September for a bundle of books for October Convention season. I will probably not have any fore New York Comic Con and will have copies for the Illuxcon Showcase.

Heres a preview for a page layout. Nothing is final and many hours of sitting in photoshop is ahead.
